During these times, having the right workplace technology is essential

During these times, having the right workplace technology is essential

Perhaps as recently as a year ago, workplace modernization was primarily a concern for IT managers. Whenever employees needed new devices, new software, or any other IT assets, their IT people were generally in charge of procuring them and getting them set up. The process was simple, and there was no need to involve upper management.

Now, though, the process is starting to change, as modern technology is at the very core of what companies do. During these times, with so many people working remotely and communicating from afar, digitizing the workplace is crucial to keeping any business afloat. According to the 2020 edition of Gartner’s Digital Workplace Survey, many companies this year have seen top leaders in the C-suite realize the urgent need for digital workplace technology, and they’ve started to get personally involved.

“68% of respondents agreed that more C-level execs have expressed involvement in the digital workplace since COVID-19,” Gartner analyst Matt Cain said. “From meeting solution software to enterprise chat platforms to Desktop as a Service, the pandemic rapidly elevated many digital workplace technologies from ‘nice to have’ to ‘must have’ status.”

The way Gartner describes it, many companies in 2020 are embracing what’s called a “new work nucleus.” In other words, business right now is centered around a collection of Software as a Service (SaaS)-based tools for personal productivity, collaboration and communication. These tools have become the cornerstone that everything else is built on. Without this new-school workplace technology, it would be difficult for employees to access email, instant messaging, file sharing, conferencing, document management or editing, or collaboration.

Of course, transitioning all of this on the fly can be a tall order, especially for senior-level management, whose time is so precious.
