Intel Optane will change how you think about managing data

For any business that wants to stay competitive in the coming years, there’s one thing they’re invariably going to need, and that is an intense focus on data center transformation. We’re currently seeing the IT landscape change rapidly – employees are moving in droves toward new technologies such as mobile devices, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. One thing all these innovations have in common is a massive appetite for data – and if you don’t have an effective way to manage it all, your business risks being left behind.

For many storage architects, the challenge is that traditional memory and storage solutions have clear limitations. Often, they run into a factor such as capacity, performance, or cost that keeps their storage strategy from reaching its full potential. For example, traditional DRAM technology is fast and efficient, but it’s limited in capacity; meanwhile, traditional solid-state drives (SSDs) offer greater capacity, but they’re weaker in terms of performance. It’s difficult to have it both ways.

Fortunately, though, Intel® has a solution. With Intel®’s Optane™ technology, organizations have a way to fill the memory and performance gaps in their data center infrastructures. The idea behind Optane™ is to close the gap between traditional memory and storage – Optane™ is a whole new technology built on a unique architecture, and it addresses memory cells using a dense, transistor-less, stackable design.

Optane™ is poised to revolutionize the process of using memory. Unlike traditional DRAM, it uses Optane™ DC persistent memory, which offers a uniquely high level of persistence. This means your data will always be retained, even after a catastrophic event like a power loss or restart. Optane™ also offers high density. This means that when your applications are optimized for Optane™ DC persistent memory, you will enjoy much faster low-latency memory access operations. Your people will become far more efficient in everything they do.

Optane™ should upend storage, as well. Optane™ DC’s SSDs bring a novel approach to data storage – they bring data much closer to the processor, which allows for fast caching and efficient storage of hot and warm data. Traditional SSDs were limited to a “sweet spot” for peak performance, which meant inconsistent results; the “sweet spot” with Optane™ is everywhere. These SSDs deliver consistently high performance where nearly all of your real-world applications operate. In addition, Optane ™’s efficient approach to storage will help companies to reduce the size of their data centers, which will in turn enable them to save money.

If your organization takes the leap and implements Intel® technology today, you’ll be able to transform your approach to managing data.
