It’s no secret that security fortification remains top of mind for IT leaders as we head into the next decade. For the second year in a row, security was the No. 1 management issue identified by CIOs and other IT executives in a recent survey by the Society for Information Management. For the fifth year in a row, it was named their most worrisome concern as well.
There are plenty of factors contributing to this issue. Ask any CIO what keeps them up at night, and the answer you’ll likely get is “everything.” In many cases, organizations are far less prepared than they need to be for the cyberthreats that could impact their business continuity at any moment. The emergence of more sophisticated and targeted threats, an ever-expanding attack surface, increasing compliance requirements and regulatory oversight, and a very real shortage of cybersecurity talent are all serious issues.
Staying prepared for potential cyberattacks is a key focus for many organizations today. As the threat landscape continues to rapidly evolve, it’s difficult for most organizations to keep up with the many complex security issues that threaten their operations daily. Many IT leaders are challenged when it comes to allocating resources for the day-to-day aspects of running the business as well as preventing cyberthreats that didn’t even exist a couple of months ago.
Is your business prepared to handle this all on its own? Many aren’t. In fact, according to Spiceworks, the majority of companies today don’t have adequate security expertise in house. A report entitled “The Future of Network and Endpoint Security” laid out the details – only 47% of businesses have one or more cyber specialists on staff such as an IT security expert, chief security officer, or information security officer. Among small businesses, that figure is even lower, at 38%. This should come as no surprise, as IT security expertise is difficult to find and to keep.
That’s why many companies look to the outside to get the help they need. In that same study, Spiceworks found that 51% of all companies work with third-party security consultants to safeguard their data, and 22% work with one or more managed security service providers. This makes it easier for them to handle cyber issues that arise without having to hire specialized talent.
